one year ago, mitt romney gave a speech at the citadel on foreign policy. it was billed and marketed as a huge speech. he will tell us how he would make the world a better place, how he would do things differently. and there wasn't a lot of meat there. once again, mitt romney had 23 minutes, he used 23 minutes, i counted them. and he basically said nothing. i agree with the president that we -- let's just get tougher with iran. we need to arm the rebels in syria, use third parties to help advance our case. he made some mistakes and blunders, of course. one mistake is that he said, this president's done nothing on free trade agreements. i guess south korea and panama, colombia -- >> didn't count for him. >> but overall, mitt romney is trying to prove -- this is his whole argument, that republicans are tougher when it comes to foreign policy. you know what? that's the old playbook. there's a new playbook because there's a new sheriff in town and that's barack obama. >> i think this was a real step backwards. last week he created an opening of how serious are

there will be some familiar themes that we expect to hear from mitt romney in the speech. he'll be speaking about the need to avert defense cuts. that affects tens of thousands of people potentially here in virginia. he'll focus on the need to reinvest in the military and also to strengthen our relationships with allies overseas. as you noted, there's not a great difference in terms of the actual policies as best we've understood them. one point he will make is on syria. his public position is a little more activist. he'll say among other things, in syria, i will work with our partners to identify those members of the opposition who share our values and assure they attain the arms they need to defeat assad's tanks, helicopters and fighter jets. >> hey, peter, you were with him all weekend and we did see a decision by the romney campaign to include in the governor's stump more personal stories. of just ways that he worked with members of for instance of his community in boston. >> yeah, i think that's right. three times in all of the events held in florida. obviously as our

the problem is mitt romney saying these things. and it's not just about the 47% that was mentioned in that speech. you have to remember, he also talked about if i was perhaps latino, it would be easier for me, i would be winning this thing already. he said a bunch of other things in that video that this is going to undermine his ability to really attack the president on domestic policies and seen as believable. because we saw mitt romney talking in private about how he really feels. so what he says on stage is going to sound hollow because we saw him behind the scenes. and that's his greatest obstacle about the whole video. it's not about the numbers and trying to break it down, it's the sentiment behind the entire video which was condescending, which came from a place of elitism. >> okay. he just misspoke. >> no, i think, carol, he makes a good point. that's going to be very difficult for romney to readdress that 47%. on the flip side, this will be the first time someone can really go after president obama over the administration'
